Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead for World Cup Despite Formal Protests from Iran and Egypt
Plans for LGBTQ+ rights events and activities in Seattle amid next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Venue Regulations Alongside City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. These events will take place around the tournament group match featuring Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing rainbow flags inside the stadium.
“In our role as hosts, our primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of Seattle Stadium,” said the vice-president of communications.
Cultural Background Behind the Formal Complaints
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation stated it did not want to be associated with celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation also raised “objections against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position Regarding Symbols
The international federation holds operational control of stadiums during games. While it prohibits political signage with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of authorities confiscating flags.
- The Pride Match concept was devised to highlight the city's longstanding tradition of championing equality.
- An artistic competition is underway to create images to commemorate the occasion.
- Organizers have pledged to ensuring every visitor are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest during the tournament.
The Pacific Northwest hosts one of the nation’s most prominent Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations representing all nations. “Our commitment is to ensuring everyone experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that characterizes our part of the country,” the statement added.
